ROUND THREE: BALANCING ACT

you gotta tip on the tightrope


Hey shippers!
Welcome to the very last main round. The R1 Phase One results should be up in a day or two, as should the R1 Phase Two voting form; the R2 entries are being processed right now, and the R2 Phase One voting form will go up when the R1 Phase Two voting form closes.

This round is a format challenge! Your R3 entry should be composed of two separate but related parts. They should be roughly equal in size/complexity; we're not going to be policing that, but the general idea is that they should balance each other in some way.


All submissions must be created/assembled new for this round by members of your team.

This challenge will run until 11:59PM EDT July 21. If your Palhoncho sends it in after that time according to the gmail timestamp and before voting closes, your team's entry will get posted--but we may not be able to approve it out of the queue right away.

Requirements (as stated in the Info Post)
Fic/meta must be between 800-3000 words.
Combination fic/art entries cannot have more than 4 images.
All other image-based media (including comics) cannot exceed 10 images/panels.
Cosplay must be at least 75% created or assembled new for the challenge.
Gifs and other animations must be 8 seconds or less total. (e.g. you could have one 5-second gif and one 3-second gif)
Games are still subject to the 10-image limit.
Live-action movies are limited to one minute total.
Original music is also limited to one minute total.

The penalties for going over 3k words will be as follows:
3000-3050: no penalty (to allow for disparities in wordcount software)
3051-3150: -30 points
3151-3250: -60 points
etc.
PLEASE NOTE that gdocs is notoriously bad at generating an accurate wordcount, so you should probably check your submission at http://www.wordcounter.net/ just to make sure.
Also, this year we are requiring transcriptions of all text on images. These transcriptions count towards the wordcount.

For audio/vid files, we are allowing a 2-second grace period, and applying a 30-point penalty every 5 seconds after that. For animations, we are allowing a 1-second grace period, and applying a 30-point penalty every 2 seconds after that.

Penalties for going over the image limit will be 30 points per extra image.

If your entry has 800 words or more, it will be considered fic and will be subject to the illustrated fic limit.

Please remember not to post your HSO creations publicly until voting ends, whether or not they are chosen as part of the team submission. We would like to keep things as anonymous as possible!

awwwwwwwwwwww yeeeeeaaaahhhhhhh we got this guys! their whole relationship is a balancing act! so lets throw out some ideas.
i think that it would be cool if we could show a balance between the really heavy "try to rip each other apart" aspect of the relationship with the whole "mutually beneficial, help each other grow" aspect that comes with kisnemitude.
because at the end of the day your kisnemisis is supposed to make you better! even if you hate them!
on the other hand we could do something with trying to balance their romance with their EXTREMELY DIFFERENT political views and the fact that there are some lines that should not be crossed and they BOTH have to think of that when dealing with each other.
any other ideas? lets hear them! :) :) :)

Hmm. I'm not quite clear on what the "formatting" might be for this.

Like an event from one perspective, and then redone to show the other perspective? Our normal Fic/Art combo would not be considered balanced? Or maybe we're supposed to somehow break up things so that each side of the balanced act had 1,500 words and 1-2 pics?

Argh, why the two week deadline? ... I want our glorious three week deadline from round one back ^^;

Hmm. Ideas:
- Gilded Age AU, where Summoner is a socialist and suspected anarchist, leading workers in a strike, and GHB is a robber baron! Negotiations happen!
- CanonU (?). Where the Summoner has to balance the fact that he's basically selling out his movement for shenanigans with his kismemis.
- Is there any way that we can do Dragons?

I don't know what the formatting means here either....I swear they insist on over-complicating this as much as possible sometimes.

And yeah I know I miss the two week deadline as well.

Also I like the CanonU idea. Its tightrope walk that's heavily leaning to one side and before you know it you'll be leaning so much the fall is inevitable.

Just been checking over on the official comm, and it looks as though the "balance" is going to come exclusively in the way of format rather than theme. So this opens us to working on whatever we want, but closes the door on formats that we choose. It would be great if we could brainstorm something by the end of the day, since having the second week to work on and refine a final thing is very important.

We could do "different (bad) ends" where things come to a head and down one road is the death of the Summoner, and down the other is the death of the Highblood (Sort of, "you won the argument, but at this cost," kinda thing).
- We can do this in fic easily
- Or just two images
- And it's a simple enough idea that a comic page can be done in 10 panels, 5 to show each route
- Dueling pesterlogs could balance one another

The other ideas would also work, but it's looking as though we really need to focus on our formatting this round.

Niji, what ideas have you been having?

I like the idea of having a good end and a bad end type thing. I also agree that if we coudl figure this out and then start working on it having 5 oposite images would work great. Or we could do A lead up to two endings. Have the first few images be the same but then the pathway branches off, a fork in the road. The choice we all have to choose. Which pathway we take? Whichever pathway you chose there's always a consequence.

Could this be done as a "choose-your-own-adventure" sort of thing? Like, there's the start, then it branches to the two endings? I can't write for crap, but this would work as a flash-game-type-thing or a clickable little webpage thing, both of which I can code.

Length would be an issue, but I'd be willing to eat a wordcount/image-overage penalty if we could do something really cool if you guys would be down with it.

I don't know jack about Flash programming, but if you tell me "I need you to write something like a death scene, and something like a mob scene and something about ghosts enjoying a PB&J sandwich" I can totally do that. In 10 sentences or less!

So, as far as I can tell we can do a 10 image choose your own adventure flash, with total text being under 800 words in length, because over 800 might get counted as fic.

The flash might be something like:

There is a mob in the throne room, what do you do?
1. Laugh in the face of the upstart who has impinged upon your most blessed good will (GHB route)
2. Issue an ultimatum to the highest authority, because today you are bringing him low. (Summoner route)

(GHB route) The mob bursts into a wicked rage and you fight--motherfucking stardust, a dragon!
(GHB route) You are subdued, and forced to kneel, most of the faithful are dead, but you are to be made an example of.
(GHB route) You accept the visit from the upstart the night before. Scar him so he will remember you.
(GHB route) You are not allowed to challenge the ruling. You smile at the upstart and wish him an interesting rule as the noose pulls tight. You topple from the block. You fall. You die.

(Summoner route) The guards are on you as the last sentence leaves your mouth.
(Summoner route) Your rebellion is crushed, and you watch him destroy all but you.
(Summoner route) You accept his visit in the shadows of dawn. He tells you he will gouge out your dragon's eyes, and chain it to the palace. You are too dangerous to live. You bite him just to prevent any regrets.
(Summoner route) They chain you to a rock, and cast you into the sea.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Yes I think that's what pi meant....but is it possible to avoid doing something simply involves death? I'd be nice to do something a little more......sexual (shot).

We can totes do sexual if Pi and/or Niji want to draw/write there! I must admit that I'm a morbid person, so I tend to go straight to final ends without considering the fun times. Looks like having gone through the Fate/Stay-Night transcription will have been perfect prep work for this! (shot for H-Game reference).

Haha. I don't actually mind. But I was just thinking a lot of what we've done has mostly been physical violence stuff for these two and while I think its a great point to show off in a kismesis ship, it is also technically a romantic pairing. And let's face it, we really only had them kiss once?

That's all I was saying. *luckily your storyboard was great in caputring both of these moments*

Hee. It's true. One of my huge Achilles heels is that it takes me a very long time to write smut. I have some sort of mental block about it. I can pull off an action scene in a couple of minutes, but it will take me weeks of starting blankly at my screen to get the other kind of action scene written. You'd think what with all I read I'd be better at it :T I think my brain operates on a different time frame.

Reader!Arter!MF = Present day
ActionWriter!MF = 1990s where it is all manly action all the time!
SmutWriter!MF = 1860s oh gosh, this is too SCANDALOUS! They might hold hands next!!!! Back away! Romance happens in private! Physical romance even more so! Preserve the sanctity of love! Shoo! Shoo!

Hehehe. Luckily I have written well lets call it smut basically before. One of the blocks I think for a lot of writers is that you want the build up but you don't want to drag it on for like 16 pages. I think here what I'm taking is that I'd liek to see perhaps a few bite ridden sloppy make-outs mixed in with some hate filled frotage. We don't have to go full on NC-17 just simply because there hasn't been any of the prompts that really fit ((Except perhaps the collab one)) but I think we could go a little bit lighter for this one. especially after the gore filled fest that was our last entry.
